Crafted at low temperatures using only small stainless-steel tanks, power and precision sum up diatom's restrained winemaking style. Sourced from vines planted over 20 years ago in the Bar-M Vineyard of Los Alamos, a magnificent and relatively unknown region of Santa Barbara County. The vineyards sandy loam soil lends itself to fruit with a bit more weight which sets the stage for Winemaker Greg Brewer to create this Chardonnay in the most unaltered, skeletal and vulnerable manner possible. Fresh lemon and lime combine with an underlying ocean salinity common to the region.
Aptly named diatom after Santa Barbara’s diatomaceous soils, which are comprised of minute, oceanic fossils. The wines are strictly made from Chardonnay and resemble the soils, with a precise, clean approach to winemaking. Cold stainless fermentation, no malolactic and the use of old vine material set the wines apart. Winemaker Greg Brewer strives for a recognition of place with as little disturbance, distraction or interference as possible. The resulting wines have a sense of transparency and a purity of intent and purpose.
