Capensis, which is Latin for “from the cape,” pays homage to South Africa’s Western Cape—one of the world’s oldest winemaking regions. Winemaker Graham Weerts sources grapes from five high-altitude vineyards to make Chardonnay blends that express the terroir and honor South Africa’s more than 400-year-old wine history. Earning comparisons to grand cru white Burgundies, Capensis’s well-structured, tightly knit, and mouth-watering Chardonnays deserve to be on your radar.
At the southwestern tip of South Africa lies the Western Cape – the only wine region nestled between two oceans: the Atlantic to the west and the Indian to the south. Maritime breezes cool the vineyards down during the day, helping to extend the growing season and retain acidity in the grapes. Most vineyards sit within 100 miles of the coast and have a Mediterranean-like climate.
The Western Cape is an exciting blend of old and new. It expresses the unparalleled quality that comes from old vines planted in some of the world’s oldest soils, and it reflects the young energy of a new generation of winemakers determined to make superior quality wine with the latest techniques. We're excited to offer Capensis wines, which embody the best of both old and new.
Capensis represents a return to winemaker Graham Weerts’s South African roots. A Cape Town native, Graham grew up in an agricultural family and spent the early part of his winemaking career there. His wine career began with working harvests in South Africa, France, and California. He subsequently transitioned to winemaking positions in those same countries while earning his degree in viticulture, wine science and pomology from Elsenburg College, South Africa’s premier agricultural college. For Graham, no other product that humans make offers the complexities and artistic value of wine. It unites people of all cultures. As Graham likes to say, “few wars were started over a great bottle of wine.” Graham is also the head winemaker for Stonestreet and Legacy wineries in Sonoma County.
