Maggy Hawk
Named for the owner Barbara Banke’s favorite racehorse, Maggy Hawk Vineyard is nestled between the redwoods and the Mendocino coast in Anderson Valley. At the northern tip of the estate lies “The Deep End” – a site typically shrouded in fog that rolls in from the ocean. Persistent fog morning and evening gives way to brilliant sunshine during the day, extending the ripening season and leading to vibrant, complex fruit. In addition to the Maggy Hawk Vineyard, the winery sources from two other Anderson Valley vineyards and a fourth site in Oregon’s Dundee Hills appellation to produce its critically acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines

Pinot Paradise: Anderson Valley.
Considered one of North America’s premier Pinot Noir regions, the Anderson Valley is a 15-mile swathe of rolling hills that cuts laterally through the coastal range. The big shift in morning and evening temperatures makes for a long growing season and helps to preserve vibrant acidity in the grapes. Production here might be low but the reputation for high-quality wines is strong. Within the Anderson Valley, Maggy Hawk has three vineyards: its flagship vineyard in the “Deep End”—which produces small yields of well-structured fruit that can go the distance in the cellar; the Skycrest Vineyard—where Chardonnay vines cling to steep hills at 2,000’; and the Edmeades Vineyard, a warmer, earlier ripening site for Pinot Noir. Like a cook with a fully loaded kitchen, winemaker Sarah Wuethrich taps into the diversity of these vineyards to layer diverse characteristics into Maggy Hawk’s wines.
Weathering Vines.
Sarah Wuethrich started out as an atmospheric science major at U.C. Davis because in her words “I thought studying weather sounded really cool!” Needing to fill a few extra units her freshman year, she enrolled in a winemaking class. “Within the first 30 minutes of that class, I felt like a lightbulb went off in my head…and I have been hooked ever since.” After graduating with a viticulture and enology degree, she worked as an enologist at St. Francis Winery and Lambert Bridge winery; co-founded a wine label for Naked Wines; and subsequently became assistant winemaker at Copain Wines – where she fell in love with Anderson Valley’s cool-climate wines. In 2017, Sarah joined Maggy Hawk and became winemaker later that year. A true advocate for the region, Sarah serves as the president of the Anderson Valley Winegrowers Association. One of her favorite food and wine pairings? A good charcuterie platter with a Maggy Hawk Pinot, of course!
